Second Annual Art Recycle Sale and Raffle: Thanks for your support!

The HNES Native Plant Garden Team wants to thank the York University community for the support for the Second Annual Art Recycle Sale and Raffle. We also want to highlight student contribution to the seeding of new species for the garden. The event was a great start for the new growing season!

Second Annual Art Recycle Sale and Raffle for HNES Native Plant Garden

Spring is soon coming and the HNES Native Plant Garden will need new plants and seeds for 2012. We need your help for the Second Annual Art Sale and Raffle that will take place on Thursday March 8th in the lounge.

We are looking for donations from you. If you paint or are a photographer, please donate one or more pieces of art. Look on your walls and in your closets. Is there something that no longer fits, but someone else might love it? Donate it to the art sale.

Please bring your art work this coming week and leave them with FES reception.

Then, come and visit our art sale during the eco-art and media festival.

See you on March 8th from 9:30 to 12:30 in the FES Lounge.

Here are some of the donations that we already have! Thanks to all donators!

Happy new year!

The new HNES Native Plant Garden team wishes everybody a happy New Year. Here’s hoping that 2012 will bring good weather, so we can enjoy the garden during the growing season!

The last months of 2011 were spent weeding and seed harvesting. We want to thank all our volunteers for helping out last fall, especially nursing students from NURS 1511. We did great!

On October 17, 2011, the HNES Native Plant Garden held a plant sale to raise funds. Seeds, seedlings, and plants were bought by members of the York University community. Thank you all for your support! The next fund raising event will take place in February.

Hope to see you there!

Art: Recycled

Good morning, everyone!

Sorry about the radio silence — it’s been a very busy month. As far as the garden’s concerned, it’s been a great one, too! We’ve now had two very successful Art Recycle fundraisers, the first of which is pictured here. At the second, which occurred as a part of the Eco Art Media Festival, we received a wonderful donation of an incredible realistic loon pair by local artist Ali Bidari. This painting was then included as a raffle which began at Tuesday night’s opening and finished after Thursday afternoon’s sale. The winner?

Drum roll, please…

Kaz Higuchi of Environment Canada/FES!

Thanks to this raffle and the generous donations of students, staff, and faculty, we raised over $500 at the festival for the garden! What amazing support from the community. Thank you so much to the Eco Art Media Festival for including us, and to the incredible artists and art lovers who donated to and came by the two Recycles. We’re looking forward to seeing you in the garden this spring!

What’s next for the garden? Stay tuned for an announcement of the pruning/cleanup event(s).

Time to push aside the winter blues with some beautiful colour, planting at the same time some beauty in your own backyard (or in your refrigerator!). In the spirit of a new season, you’ll notice we’ve changed the look of the blog a bit with a springtime theme.

This Thursday, February 10th, from 11:30-2:00 stop by the FES Lounge/ZigZag Gallery (HNES 136) to check out (and purchase to take home) some beautiful artwork donated by faculty, staff, and students in the garden community. We’ll also have seeds lovingly collected at the Putting the Garden to Bed event, a sign-up sheet for notification on future events, and information available on both cold stratification and the opportunities for Independent Directed Studies in the garden this summer! Funds raised will go toward purchasing more beautiful native plants and tools for the community.

We’re still gratefully accepting donations until the 8th, so please don’t hesitate to stop by Natasha Hargovan’s office, HNES 131, to drop off any artwork that you would like to recycle. Don’t forget to include your name and contact information, the name of the artist, and a suggested price!

As you can see in this picture to the right, we have some beautiful coldframes now, made by Michael Classens, and are very grateful for his wonderful work. Keep your eyes peeled in the spring for the composters we’re looking forward to!
